Plain answers about what we do and don't see, and how to reduce the trace this visit leaves behind.

What "Quick exit" does

Clicking the Quick exit button, or pressing Esc twice quickly, immediately takes this tab to a neutral page. Every page on this site also replaces itself in your browser's history as you move between them, rather than adding a new entry each time — so however many OnAsylum pages you'd visited before hitting exit, your whole visit only ever occupies one slot in your history. Pressing "back" from the neutral page takes you to wherever you were before you arrived here, never to another page on this site.

One side effect worth knowing: because of this, your browser's own Back and Forward buttons won't step between OnAsylum's pages the way they normally would on other sites — use the menu links instead to move around. That trade-off is intentional.

What it can't do

  • It can't clear your browser's History menu (Ctrl/Cmd+H) — that's a separate, permanent list your browser keeps, and the back-button protection above doesn't touch it. Clearing it yourself, or using private browsing, are the only real fixes for that.
  • It can't erase anything from your device's activity logs.
  • It can't hide this visit from your internet provider or network administrator.
  • Sending the contact form is one exception to the back-button protection above — it's a real form submission, not a link, so it can leave one extra page behind in your history even though the rest of the site doesn't.

We'd rather tell you plainly what it doesn't do than let you assume more protection than it gives.

Browsing more privately

  • Private / incognito windows (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N in most browsers) don't save this visit to your history once the window is closed.
  • Shared or public computers — closing all browser windows when you're done is safer than trusting any single setting.
  • If someone might check your device, consider using a library, a friend's device, or a public computer instead.
