Switzerland
Runs a fast, centralized federal asylum procedure with applicants housed at federal centers during initial processing.
At a glance, for someone deciding whether to come here
Not tourist facts โ the things that actually shape daily life while your case is pending and after it's decided.
How you could qualify to enter this system
- In-land asylum application at a federal asylum center
- Resettlement quotas coordinated with UNHCR
How the process generally works
Applicants register at a federal asylum center, are assigned free legal representation as standard, and are interviewed by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
Step by step
Register at a federal asylum center
You're assigned free legal representation as a standard part of the procedure, and biometric screening is completed.
SEM interview
Which of three tracks (accelerated, extended, or Dublin) applies shapes how the rest of the process runs.
Decision Up to 140 days at a federal center
Delivered within the federal center for the accelerated track, or after transfer to a canton for the extended track.
Appeal, if refused 7 working days (accelerated), 30 days (extended), or 5 days (Dublin)
To the Federal Administrative Court (FAC) โ the sole appeal authority; no further appeal to the Federal Supreme Court in most asylum cases.
What you'll typically need
- Passport or ID if available
- Evidence supporting the claim
Support available while your case is decided
- Free legal representation is provided as part of the standard procedure
- Federal center housing during initial processing
Switzerland is not an EU member, but as an associated Schengen/Dublin state it has formally adopted the EU's new asylum system alongside the EU itself, from 12 June 2026 โ including mandatory biometric screening at the border and tighter transfer deadlines. One detail that can work in your favor: the revised rules give more weight to genuine ties to a specific country (family already there, or a qualification from that country's institutions) when deciding which country handles your case.
Common pitfalls
- Missing an appeal deadline โ these are unusually short and track-dependent, as little as 5 working days for a Dublin dismissal.
- Assuming free legal representation means the same lawyer handles an appeal โ representation is tied to the federal-center phase and its scope can be limited.
- Not flagging genuine ties to a specific country early โ family already there, or a local qualification, can affect which country handles your case under the rules that took effect June 2026.
