France
Operates a national asylum system through OFPRA, with regional reception platforms handling initial registration.
At a glance, for someone deciding whether to come here
Not tourist facts โ the things that actually shape daily life while your case is pending and after it's decided.
How you could qualify to enter this system
- In-land asylum application to OFPRA
- Resettlement quotas coordinated with UNHCR
How the process generally works
Applicants register at a regional platform (SPADA/GUDA), receive a temporary residence permit while the claim is reviewed, and attend an interview with OFPRA. Appeals go to the National Court of Asylum (CNDA).
Step by step
Register at a regional platform
SPADA/GUDA registers you and issues a temporary residence permit for the duration of the claim.
Lodge the application with OFPRA Within 21 calendar days of registration
Written in or translated to French where possible.
OFPRA examines the claim 6 months (regular) or ~15 days (accelerated track)
Includes an interview in most cases.
Appeal, if refused 1 month (standard), or just 10 days for accelerated/border rejections since a 2026 reform
To the National Court of Asylum (CNDA).
What you'll typically need
- Passport or ID if available
- Evidence supporting the claim, written in or translated to French where possible
Support available while your case is decided
- Reception centers (CADA) where available
- Financial allowance for asylum seekers (ADA) during the process
- France Terre d'Asile and other independent advocacy organizations
Housing capacity is limited relative to demand in major cities; waits for a reception center place can be long, and many applicants live without state housing while waiting. Average first-instance processing time rose to around 5.4 months in 2025 (up from 4.5 months in 2024). Since June 2026, appeals against inadmissibility or accelerated-procedure rejections must be filed with the CNDA within just 10 days โ much tighter than before, and part of the broader EU-wide speedup (see the system-wide note below).
Common pitfalls
- Assuming you have the standard one-month CNDA appeal window โ a 2026 decree cut this to just 10 days for accelerated-procedure and border-case rejections.
- Underestimating processing time โ average first-instance waits rose to around 5.4 months in 2025, and many applicants live without state housing (CADA) while waiting given limited capacity.
- Not preparing evidence in French โ while not strictly mandatory, untranslated evidence can slow your case.
