Europe
Finland
Processes asylum applications through the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri), with reception centers run by the state and municipalities.
At a glance, for someone deciding whether to come here
Not tourist facts โ the things that actually shape daily life while your case is pending and after it's decided.
How you could qualify to enter this system
- In-land asylum application to Migri
- UNHCR-referred resettlement (Finland has one of Europe's higher per-capita quotas)
How the process generally works
Applicants register with the police or border guard, are placed in a reception center, and are interviewed by Migri. Since 12 June 2026, applications go through three distinct stages โ making, registering, and lodging โ each with its own time limit that matters for your case. Appeals go to the Administrative Court, and since June 2026 an appeal no longer automatically pauses a deportation for certain decisions.
Step by step
Making the application
Expressing your wish to apply, to police or the border guard.
Registering the application
Formal registration โ the first of three distinct, time-limited stages introduced 12 June 2026.
Lodging the application
Completing the formal claim with full details.
Interview and decision
By Migri; the decision and appeal instructions are served on your legal counsel (as of July 2026).
Appeal, if refused Typically 30 days, stated in your decision letter
To the Administrative Court.
What you'll typically need
- Passport or ID if available
- Evidence supporting the claim
Support available while your case is decided
- Reception center housing and a small allowance during processing
- Free Finnish/Swedish language instruction once status is granted
Finland has tightened some asylum and residence-permit rules in recent years in line with broader Nordic trends. As of July 2026, Migri serves its decision and appeal instructions on your legal counsel rather than directly on you โ make sure Migri has your lawyer's current contact details.
Common pitfalls
- Missing one of the three separate time limits (making, registering, lodging) introduced in June 2026 โ each matters, not just the final lodging step.
- Assuming an appeal automatically pauses a deportation โ since June 2026 this is no longer guaranteed for certain decisions; enforcement can begin once the appeal period expires.
- Not keeping your lawyer's contact details current with Migri โ decisions are now served on counsel, not directly on you.
